Enhanced Definition (EDTV): A form of digital television operating with a resolution of 480p, and either a standard or widescreen aspect ratio. EDTV is measured as being between SDTV and HDTV in terms of picture quality on the digital scale.

FCC: The Federal Communications Commission is the regulatory body in the United States for over-the-air stations, also known as broadcast stations, like ABC, FOX, ABC, and NBC. Learn more about the FCC at www.fcc.gov.

Flat Panel: A television set light enough to hang from a wall or ceiling. They are usually 3 to 4 inches thick. LCD’s and Plasma are the most common flat panel televisions.

HD-Ready: A High Definition television able to receive over-the-air HD signals only if paired with an external receiver to decode the signal. Most external receivers are provided for a small price by cable and satellite companies, but can by purchased at many electronics stores or over the Internet.

High Definition (HDTV): The high-end of digital television. HDTV is widescreen, and features resolutions of either 720p or 12080i. High Definition or HDTV A form of digital television that has a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, and a resolution of 720p or 1080i.

Integrated HDTV: A High Definition television also referred as having a built-in tuner, making it capable of receiving over-the-air HD signals without the aid of an external receiver.

Interactive Services: On-screen features provided by cable and satellite companies, like video on demand and program guides, to aid in television watching and recording. Interactive services are an added feature of digital television.

Interlaced Scanning: The way a television decodes an image – a frame is broken into two fields, odd (1, 3, 5, 7…) and even (2, 4, 6, 8…). A television will scan 60 fields per second with 30 odd and 30 even fields created. By combining the two fields every 1/30 of a second, a frame is created thus creating 30 frames per second – a standard in television broadcasting.
