High-definition components are a home video fanatic's best friend because they're the only way to get the best possible picture out of your TV. These high-def components include Blu-ray players, gaming systems and some cable and satellite receivers. The following tutorial will show you how to connect any of them using a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cable.

Why HDMI?

A single HDMI cable carries both video and audio signals, making hookup particularly easy. Also, many high-definition components will only deliver top video resolution (1080p) when connected with an HDMI cable.

Step 1: Find the HDMI output on your high-definition video source. For the purpose of illustration, we're using a cable box, but the output will look similar on a Blu-ray player, satellite receiver or any other high-def source.

Tip: It's best to have both your component and television unplugged - or at least powered down - when making new connections.
