Forrest Hartman is a veteran entertainment journalist who has covered everything from America's conversion to high-definition television to the Academy Awards. He is also a professional film critic and home theater enthusiast.

Forrest has more than a decade of experience as a journalist, writing for newspapers, magazines and the Web. Along with his work for About.com, he is arts editor of the Reno Gazette-Journal and a regular contributor to Gannett News Service, Reno Magazine and New Jersey View magazine. His byline has appeared in some of the largest newspapers in the nation, and he writes a syndicated DVD column that appears weekly in the Reno Gazette-Journal, Lansing State Journal, Florida Today and several smaller publications. Forrest earned a bachelor's degree in Information and Communication Studies, with an emphasis on journalism, from California State University, Chico, in 1990. He is currently pursuing his master's degree in English at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Working as a professional film and DVD critic requires one to spend years sitting in the dark, communing with his television set. So, it's only natural that my love for movies would spawn an equal enthusiasm and respect for home theater systems.
I'm dating myself by admitting that I remember the days when VHS was a novelty and there was only a single video rental store in my hometown. If you had told me then that I would someday be watching movies at home that were just as beautifully rendered as in theaters, I wouldn't have believed it. I believe it now, and I take great joy in following advances in not only television technology, but in the gear that allows TVs to reach their full potential: Blu-ray players, digital video recorders, home theater amplifiers, speakers, etc.
