Verizon FiOS Customers Can Use Cell Phones as Remotes

From Forrest Hartman, About.com GuideFebruary 25, 2010

If you subscribe to Verizon's FiOS TV and cellular service and you own a Motorola Droid or HTC Imagio, you can now set up your phone to control your FiOS TV box.

According to a Verizon press release, your phone can handle all the standard applications of you FiOS remote, plus you can transfer photos directly from the phone to your set-top box. Other special features include the ability to make the phone automatically mute your TV programming when a call comes in.

Don't have a Droid or Imagio? Don't despair. Verizon says it will be rolling the service to additional phones in the coming months.

For those of you who already have all the necessary equipment, Verizon says you can start using the service today by following these instructions, which I've pulled from a company press release.

  • Customers can access the new feature through the applications store on their mobile phone handset and then pair the device with their in-home FiOS network by opening up the Mobile Remote Widget on FiOS TV and selecting either the Motorola Droid or HTC Imagio icon. Customers will be asked to register their wireless telephone number, using the widget. Customers can register their handsets on any FiOS TV, at home or away.
