Review: Pioneer KURO Elite PRO-950HD 42" Plasma

From Matthew Torres, About.com GuideJanuary 8, 2008

What can I say about this TV that I haven't written already? Pioneer makes a good plasma television and the Elite PRO-950HD is a great television. So, with that logic you'd have to conclude that Pioneer makes a great plasma television. I agree.

Seriously, this plasma panel was beautiful. It did everything you can ask from a television. The picture was immaculate. Blacks were deep, edges were crisp and colors were bright and vivid. I recommend anyone disbelieving my comments to take a run to the electronics store and see for yourself and then comment back.

I saw this TV in the Magnolia department of my local BestBuy. I would have to agree that it has a great picture, whether displaying HD or standard def. Nothing else around it in the store matched its picture quality. I was therefore more than a little surprised to look at its specs later online and discover that its pixel matrix is exactly the same as an XGA computer monitor — that is, 1024 x 768. As you know, that is a really wacky matrix for displaying video material on a TV and means that all inputed signals have to be scaled up or down. By all rights, the picture quality of this TV should be marred by lost resolution and scaling artifacts. But, I tell you, I would have been hard pressed to see any problems with the picture. What gives here? By what engineering wizardry has Pioneer been able to pull this off?!!

pioneer consistently demonstrates the statement that one should trust their eyes rather than specs alone. based on specs, pioneer’s contrat ratio and resolution are bested by many, based on my eyes, they produce the best image in the industry.

A nice tv. However, displayed next to other choices, one has to wonder a couple things. First, like in gasoline industry mentality, is this what television companies think average consumers are heading pay for a television — $2,500~ no thanks. Not worth it at all. Get it to around $700, we’ll talk. Secondly, the fact it gets that hot, along with the ghost image burn disclaimer, means one should look into other models — especially LCD instead of plasma. The REAL bottom line is, why would they set an MSRP of $2700? Because they know there are fools out there that would pay it. Unless they give you a free one to write a glowing review about it.

Burt – I do not keep these televisions. I returned it to Pioneer after viewing it for about a month. As far as the price, I think you should have used cars instead of gasoline. The Pioneer KURO is like a BMW to a Saturn. Both good cars but different price points, features, visual design.

Hello Sir, I heard that the Pioneer Elite Pro-950HD 42″ is Discontinued. Is that really true? It would be a shame if it is. Thank You for your time.

I would recommend antone buying a Pioneer TV to consider something else. Yes the picture is outstanding, but the build quality os very poor. I paid $5000 for one of their TVs about 39 months ago and they are refusing to replace the tuner section which has gone bad. To top that off, they want $500 to send it in. So in reality, its a $5500 + TV. Just consider it prior to purchasing.
