In The News: Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba and TiVo

  • Panasonic.com said in a press release that their new DMP-BD10A Blu-Ray player has been released with a price down to $599.95. Their previous model, the DMP-BD10, had price estimate of $1,300. Not only is the BD10A Blu-Ray player much cheaper, it also comes with five Blu-Ray movies.
  • In an article from Reuters, Samsung had stated that they were working to obtain more sales in the LCD industry. Evidently due to a rigid market that LCD manufacturers are facing currently, Samsung is trying to compete with price drops and competition with Sony, who held 17.4% in revenue last quarter. Samsung held 14% in sales. According to the same article, iSuppli, a marketing research firm, said that 32-inch LCD panels are expected to drop 17% soon, as well as 40-inch panels looking at a 18% drop.
  • Toshiba announced in a recent press release that they will be offering a Father's Day promotion on their HD-DVD players. Between May 20 through June 9, those who buy an HD-A2 HD-DVD player will get a $100 in-store instant rebate. June 10 through June 16 if you buy a any 42" or bigger HDTV along with an HD-DVD you will get a $200 in-store instant rebate.
  • In a May 15 press release, TiVo introduced its universal Swivel Search to ease the navigation through the numerous amounts of digital channels available today. The search uses common traits ranging from actors names to subject content for finding more shows that may appeal to the viewer.
