Widescreen Televisions and 4:3 resolution

I read a message in the forum for this Web site that expressed concern with how a widescreen television stretches a standard 4:3 image. In the message, this person wrote that it seems “we are so focused on resolution (HDTV) but (we) accept a distorted picture.”

This is actually an important observation with respect to widescreen televisions. Why? Because most television programming is produced in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
