Buying Extended Warranties

I will go out on a limb and speculate that you will be offered the option to purchase an extended warranty this holiday season when buying something associated with a television. That could mean a DVD player, VCR, television or even a universal remote control. There is nothing wrong with listening to the sales pitch for extra coverage. Heck, it might even be a good plan at a good price.

There is a rumor floating around that extended warranties are a way for retail stores to maximize profits in this day and age of Internet shopping and buying direct from the manufacturer. I don't know if that rumor is true or not, but I will suggest that not everyone needs the extra coverage. Sometimes the manufacturers warranty is enough.

There are many factors to consider. So many that I wrote an article about extended warranties. I should come clean and mention that I have never purchased an extended warranty for an electronics device because I don't personally think they are worth the expense. But, I have family members that buy extended warranties. For them it is about the security in having the extra coverage, and I respect them for that. Read More
