Introduction: CableCARD Technology

Sunday November 6, 2005
CableCARD technology is not available for DirecTV, DISH Network or other satellite service subscribers. It is only valid for cable subscribers. The purpose of the CableCARD is to eliminate excess clutter around the television set - mainly the settop box and cables coming to and from it. Essentially, the CableCARD makes it possible to watch cable TV programming without the aide of an external digital receiver (settop box).

My Thoughts: I am not a big fan of CableCARD technology. I like the fact that a settop box is no longer needed, and that there will be less cables coming and going into the television. But, my concerns outweigh any equipment advantage. People who use a CableCARD will likely pay the same price for service as someone using a settop even though the CableCARD utilizes less features and functions. It really is a good idea, but is still years away from being something viable.
