Video: How To Clean A DVD

Sunday September 25, 2005
Keeping DVDs and CDs free of dust and scratches is important for several reasons:
  • A damaged disc may not play as expected
  • Inserting a disc with foreign substances on it could damage the player
  • Replacing a disc due to self-inflicted damage is a waste of money because it essentially doubles the price paid per disc

A few months ago I was able to create a short video clip explaining various techniques used in cleaning a DVD and CD. In the video I also showcase the Skip Doctor by Digital Innovations. To watch the video, Click Here.

Thanks for the little video on cleaning CD and DVDs. Unfortunately, you missed my problem. There is gunk on a DVD I just got from Netfix. Looks like something was splattered or sprayed near it. Can I use water?

Yes, you can use water - even with a little soap. I recommend using a microfiber cloth to wash it with.

I thought circular motions were bad for the DVD and that you should only wipe from the center to the outside edge. What is best?

(4) tv says:

No, you are right ‘Kids at Home’ - the disc should be rubbed from the inner edge toward the outside while rotating the disc. Rubbing in a circular motion might damage the disc.

Nice video with good content, Matthew. Served everyone’s (skip doctor, folks with children who abuse discs, etc.) interests.
