Q & A: How A Television Determines The Resolution

QUESTION: "Considering that I've installed all the necessary equipment to display higher resolutions, like progressive scan DVD player, HDTV sets, etc, would my Sony HD television automatically detect and display the highest resolution of the video? Or, would it display something lower? For example, if I play a movie that is available in 720p resolution on my progressive scan dvd player, would my sony hd television automatically display the 720p resolution or would it display it as something lower such as 480i or 480p?"
